  • Buses to start rolling out of University of Waterloo Station January 3, 2022 Waterloo Region – Buses will begin rolling out of Grand River Transit’s (GRT) new bus platform at the University of Waterloo Station beginning Monday, January 3, 2022. “We are excited to open for the start of a new year and improve access to and around the university,” said Tom Galloway, Regional Councillor and Chair of the Planning and Works Committee.
  • Region invests in a more equitable future for all Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo is building a more equitable future for residents through the 2022 budget. The Plan and Budget supports Council’s vision to build a world-class community through a historic investment that improves the lives of all 630,000 residents in Waterloo Region.
  • Waterloo Region ramping up to get third doses in arms as quickly as possible Waterloo Region – Due to the rapidly evolving Omicron situation in Ontario, Waterloo Region is ramping up its vaccination efforts so more third doses of the COVID-19 vaccine can be administered as quickly as possible. A third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine given 168 days after a second dose boosts a person’s immunity after their original vaccination.
  • Growing risk of Omicron spread in Waterloo Region Waterloo Region – Region of Waterloo Public Health has just received confirmation of four cases of Omicron in Waterloo Region residents. Public Health is also reporting there are now nine sports teams that have suspect or confirmed Omicron cases with high-risk contacts.
  • Region of Waterloo investigating strong probability of Omicron cases associated with two hockey tournaments Waterloo Region – Region of Waterloo Public Health is reporting the strong probability that two COVID-19 hockey tournament outbreaks it is investigating involving local players is associated with the Omicron variant. Public Health is following up with hockey players and all high-risk contacts to advise them to stay at home and quarantine until the test results are available.
  • Regional Economic Development Committee passes $50K to fund PPE for the local arts and culture sector Waterloo Region – Today, the Regional Economic Development Committee approved funding for a new program to support the local arts and culture sector as they continue to reopen from pandemic restrictions. The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Information program will provide members of arts communities with free access to kits that contain the tools needed to operate safely under public health measures.
  • “Every Dose Counts” weekend will administer third doses for 70+ and health care workers Waterloo Region – This coming weekend, the Every Dose Counts event that is focusing on vaccinating Waterloo Region’s 5-11 year olds is also going to be able to accommodate adults 70+ and health care workers who need a booster dose of the vaccine (six months or 168 days after their second dose). Many people who are eligible for booster doses will have the opportunity to book an appointment for the Every Dose Counts event on December 11-12.
  • Region’s plan and budget laying foundation for more equitable future Waterloo Region – Tomorrow, Regional Council will continue to discuss a comprehensive Plan and Budget that prioritizes a more equitable future for all residents. “The 2022 Plan and Budget was built and developed with input from residents and supports Council’s vision to provide programs and services that improve the lives of all of the 630,000 residents that we serve,” said Councillor Helen Jowett, Chair of the Region’s Administration and Finance Committee.
  • St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church partners with The Working Centre and Region of Waterloo to launch emergency overnight seasonal shelter site Kitchener, ON - A new partnership between St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, The Working Centre, and the Region of Waterloo, has been forged to address an urgent community need for temporary shelter, facilitating the launch of an interim overnight shelter for displaced individuals through the coming winter months.
  • Southridge Public School closed for in-person learning due to COVID-19 outbreak Waterloo Region - Due to the concern for widespread and rapid transmission of COVID-19, Region of Waterloo Public Health and Emergency Services is directing the whole school closure of Southridge Public School in Kitchener. Public Health is working closely with the school to ensure infection prevention and control protocols are implemented in order to protect staff, students and their families from exposure to the virus.
