Freeport Bridge

Overview

Project number: 05774 |  Updated: January 2026

The Region of Waterloo is rehabilitating the Freeport Bridge in Kitchener. This bridge is on King Street E and sits between Riverbank Drive and Stonegate Drive in Kitchener.

In early 2024, weight limits were put on the Freeport Bridge after an engineering study found that heavy vehicles could be putting stress on the concrete arches. The bridge was not designed to handle this level of heavy traffic repeatedly over a long period of time. Since July 2024, the bridge has been monitored to understand how it responds to traffic. Additional testing in May 2025 checked the condition of the structure. The results confirmed that the bridge can be rehabilitated rather than fully replaced.

When the bridge rehabilitation is complete, heavy vehicles will be allowed back on the bridge. This includes GRT busses, school busses, fire trucks, waste collection trucks and other heavy vehicles.
