Bulky Items and Appliances

Bulky Item Image

Bulky items are items that do not fit inside of the black cart for garbage, such as a large appliance or piece of furniture.

The Region of Waterloo provides bulky item collection once-a-month for eligible households on their scheduled bulky item collection day.

 The following limits apply:

  • Single family homes: Maximum three items per household per collection
  • Duplexes (two units): Maximum six items per duplex per collection
  • Small buildings with three to six units: Maximum 10 items per building per collection
  • Please note: Each bundle counts as one item
  • Garbage tags can't be used for bulky items
  • Do not pile garbage bags or other waste on top of bulky items
  • If you set out your item with a "free" or "for sale" sign on it, collection crews will not collect it
  • Different trucks pick up different materials. The time that your items are collected may vary depending on factors, such as routing changes, road construction, and weather conditions

If your bulky item was not collected:

  • Check for an Oops! sticker. The collection crew may have left a sticker to indicate a problem. If there is a sticker, remove your item from the curb and set it out, as appropriate, on the next scheduled collection day.
  • If there is no sticker on your bulky item, and it was set out at 7 a .m. on your bulky item collection day, please leave it out at the curb and use our online form to report the issue or call the Service First Contact Centre at 519-575-4400, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

How to sort your waste

You can use the Waste Whiz app to learn what you can set out for bulky item pickup. Waste Whiz is our handy waste sorting tool, where you can look up specific items, check your collection schedule, and more

Bulky items include:

  • Coaches and chairs, a maximum of 6 feet in length
  • Mattresses
  • Rolled up and tied carpet, a maximum of 3 feet in length
  • Wood/flooring bundle with nails removed, a maximum of 3 feet in length
