Roads and infrastructure maintenance | 2026

This page provides an overview of the Region's 2026 road and infrastructure maintenance program. This is an annual program to improve and address aging infrastructure and repairs needed on roads, GRT bus stops, intersections, multi-use paths and sidewalks.

Roads and active transportation maintenance

Nafziger road resurfacing - milling and paving from south of Erbs Road to north of Snyder's road west.
Sawmill road resurfacing - milling, pulverizing and paving from north of Snyders Flats Road to south of Katherine Street/Crowsfoot Road with safety upgrades to guiderails

Intersection and traffic signal improvements

Cambridge locations

Concession Street at Cameron Street (Type B PXO with rapid flashers and overhead signage)
George Street North and Blair Road (new traffic signals, ladder crosswalks, and improved pedestrian landing areas)
Dundas Street South at Fitzgerald Drive, Cambridge (New crossride installation)
- Timing: July - mid August
- Construction impact: Please expect temporary lane and sidewalk closures. Two-way traffic will be maintained. All road users should please plan ahead and use posted detours around work areas.

Waterloo locations

University Avenue West and Lester Street (upgrading the existing Intersection Pedestrian Signal to a Full Traffic Signal (all directions), ladder crosswalks, and improved pedestrian landing areas)
Northfield Drive East and Bridge Street (New crossride installation on the south leg of the intersection for the existing multi-use trail, including protection intersection improvements by realigning/reducing crosswalk widths on the other legs of the intersection)
Erb Street West and Caroline Street (PROVISIONAL – Subject to Final Design Approval) – intersection improvements, including adding crossrides on the west, north, and east legs of the intersection. It also includes enlarging the existing right-turn channelized island and relocating one train control arm to make it safer and provide more space for pedestrians/cyclists while trying to get through this intersection.

Kitchener locations

Victoria Street South between Westforest Trail and Eastforest Trail (intersection improvements, pedestrian/cyclist landing areas, converting the existing sidewalk to a wider MUP, adding a new pedestrian refuge island)
- Timing: July - September 2026
- Construction impact: The sidewalk will remain fully closed during construction. Pedestrians are advised to plan ahead and use alternative routes around the work zone to access nearby schools and the Greengable Park baseball diamond.
Victoria Street between west of Lancaster Street to East of Weber Street (isolated sidewalk panel removal and replacement, curb repairs)
- Note: the work is anticipated to begin on or around June 24 for approximately one week. There will be localized lane closures; however, traffic will be maintained in both directions.

Wilmot locations

Huron Street at Milton Street (Type C PXO with rapid flashers)
- Timing: July 21, 2026 (2 weeks)
- Construction impact: temporary lane and sidewalk closures will be in place. Two-way traffic will be maintained, but road users should expect delays. Pedestrians are asked to follow posted detours around the work area

Woolwich locations

King Street at Cedar Street (Type C PXO with rapid flashers)
King Street at High Crest Lane (Type C PXO with rapid flashers)
- Timing: on or about July 13, 2026 (approximately 2 weeks)
- Construction impact: There will be a temporary sidewalk closure and construction equipment in the intersections. Motorists and cyclists are advised that two-way traffic will be maintained; however, there will be temporary lane closures and possible delays in the area. Pedestrians are also advised to plan ahead and follow any posted pedestrian detour signage around the work zones.
- Once these PXO's are installed, motorists and cyclists will be required to yield the entire roadway and wait until pedestrians completely cross before proceeding.

GRT improvements

Doon Station,

- Construction of a new Grand River Transit (GRT) station at Conestoga College Doon Campus which includes new bus bays, passenger amenities, bike parking, and improved pedestrian and cycling connections.
- August 2026 - October 2027
- Two-way traffic will be maintained on Doon Valley Drive
- The existing GRT stops outside College A-Wing building (Door 3) will be closed between August 17 - August 31, 2026.

Paving improvements

Paving improvements are taking place at various locations across the cities and townships in the Region of Waterloo from late July through late September. Construction schedules will vary by location. A list of paving locations is provided below:
