The Region of Waterloo, in partnership with the City of Waterloo, is completing improvements to local water infrastructure along Columbia Street from Westmount Road to King Street North.

The project includes:

• installation of new watermain infrastructure
• replacement of portions of the existing system
• upgrades to valves and related components. 

Current work

Watermain installation is ongoing along Columbia Street, from King Street through the Phillip Street intersection. Work is expected to be completed by the end of November 2026. Lane restrictions and traffic disruptions will continue throughout construction; however, two-way traffic will be maintained along Columbia Street.

Upcoming work

Overnight paving is scheduled for October 22 and 23, 2026. Full overnight closures will be required at the King Street and Columbia Street intersection, with detours in place to guide motorists around the work area. Nearby residents and businesses may experience overnight construction noise.

Looking ahead: November 2026

Construction will continue through November as crews complete the watermain installation through the Phillip Street intersection. Drivers should plan for delays, follow posted detours and allow extra time when travelling through the area. Work schedules may change due to weather or other construction conditions.

Construction will continue in phases through 2026 to 2028. Upcoming work includes work on Philip to Westmount in 2026/2027, watermain installation beneath the ION tracks between Philip Street and Hagey Boulevard in Winter 2027, followed by pavement replacement between King Street and Lester Street in spring 2027. Final road paving and cycling infrastructure improvements are planned for 2028.
