Help keep salt out of groundwater

Join other businesses taking steps to use less salt without compromising winter safety.

Prior to winter:

  • Walk your property to understand where ice forms and how to prevent it
  • Close areas not requiring winter maintenance
  • Require salt training for your winter maintenance team and hired service
  • Maintain annual documentation of winter maintenance activities and training
  • Prepare your winter maintenance plan with the help of our free worksheet
  • Know where to store plowed snow so ice doesn't form across your parking lot
  • Have a plan to deal with ice when it is too cold for salt to work (around -10C)

After winter, review your plan and ask yourself:

  • Were there problem areas from drifting snow or ice formation
  • Is there salt staining or property damage from over salting
  • Are there areas you can close next winter instead of salting
  • Are there changes your contractor can make to use less salt
