King Street & Sportsworld Drive Reconstruction

The Region of Waterloo will be completing infrastructure improvements along King Street East and Sportsworld Drive in Kitchener. This work includes reconstruction of the existing road, replacement of the storm sewer system, relocation of the City of Kitchener sanitary sewer, traffic signal modernization, and installation of upgraded street lighting. It also includes the construction of new sidewalks and multi-use paths, as well as minor access and intersection improvements

This project is being completed in phases:

Stage 1: King Street (Sportsworld to Highway #401)
Stage 2: King Street (Sportsworld to Deer Ridge) and Sportsworld Drive (King Street to Gateway)
Stage 3: King Street (Deer Ride to the Grand River)

The work includes:

Reconstruction of the existing road to a 4-lane standard
Replacement of selected sections of the existing storm sewer
Relocation of City of Kitchener sanitary sewers and watermain
Minor access configuration improvements and upgrades
Relocation and upgrades to existing hydro, gas and telecom utilities
Traffic signal modernization and installation of enhanced street-lighting to current standards
New concrete sidewalks and multi-use trails.

Schedule

Construction stage 1: 2022-2024 (completed)
Construction stage 2: Starting June 2026 – December 2026 (ongoing)
Construction stage 3: 2032 - 2033

Note: timing may be affected by weather conditions and changing project scope; updates will be posted as needed.

Budget

$17,195,000

Getting around during construction

Work to relocate water, gas, hydro, and telecom lines is already underway and will continue into the start of construction. During construction, traffic will be maintained with at least one lane in each direction, along with turn lanes where needed.

Surface paving is scheduled to be completed in Spring 2027.

Public engagement

A Public Consultation Centre (PCC) was held on May 2, 2019 to present the Preliminary Design Concept for the improvements to King Street East and Sportsworld Drive for public review and comment.
