Walking and cycling safety
Walking safety
Pedestrians face a higher risk at signalized intersections:
- 89% of pedestrian collisions are at signalized intersections
- 56% of pedestrians who are hit by vehicles have the right of way
- 1 in 3 pedestrian collisions are caused by a turning vehicle
Whether driving or walking, stay alert at intersections. Before you enter a crosswalk, do the extra sec check:
- Take an extra second to check the traffic signals
- Look left, right and straight ahead to make sure the way is clear
- Give everyone a safe journey - including you!
Cycling safety
Cycling collisions are most common at signalized intersections:
- 74% of cycling collisions happen at intersections
- 58% of those collisions occur in the crosswalk
Before you bike through an intersection, do the extra sec check:
- Take a second to check the traffic signals
- Look over your left shoulder and ahead for turning vehicles
- Continue to watch for vehicles as you ride through
Drivers, expect and respect cyclists at every intersection:
- Always look for cyclists before you turn left or right
- Always check your blind spot for bicycles before changing lanes
- Always give one metre of space to cyclists
