Roundabout pedestrian safety pilot
Overview
Project number: 07686 | Updated: November 2025
The Region of Waterloo is improving three existing roundabouts in Kitchener, Cambridge and Waterloo. This work is part of the roundabout pedestrian safety pilot that is trialing three different crosswalk safety features to help anyone walking or rolling feel more safe. While roundabouts have a good safety record, some people feel less safe at these crossings, especially people with disabilities or people who find it hard to cross quickly.
Three options will be explored at three locations. Each pilot location will also include improved lighting and curb and storm sewer upgrades for better drainage. The locations include:
- Homer Watson Boulevard and Block Line Road (raised crosswalks)
- Franklin Boulevard and Bishop Street North (flashing lights)
- Erb Street West and Ira Needles Boulevard/Erbsville Road (flashing lights and raised crosswalks)
For more information on the pedestrian safety features and to provide your input on the pilot project, visit the EngageWR page.

Getting around during construction
Construction at all three locations is wrapping up this month. While we complete the finishing touches, please expect some delays.
Public engagement
A final report from the pilot will be shared with Regional Council in 2026 with recommendations about whether crosswalk improvements should be added to new or existing roundabouts.
To help inform the report, tell us about your experiences using the roundabouts, while driving, or using the crosswalk. A survey will be available following construction of the project.
